December 19, 2016, Triangle, VA — Thanks to a generous contribution from Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores, approximately 13,000 toys and 1,400 bicycles and helmets will be distributed to families in Detroit, Flint and surrounding neighborhoods served by the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation this holiday season.
“The holidays should be a special time for kids and their families and we want to help brighten up the season,” said Mr. Gores. “We have been working with Toys for Tots for a long time. It’s an incredible organization that makes a huge impact this time of year. We’re proud to work together to bring more hope and happiness into the lives of Michigan’s children.”
Tom Gores and his wife Holly support many causes focused on improving the quality of life for families in need in Detroit, Flint and throughout the state. They have formed partnerships with several community organizations focused on education, job training, mentorship, youth sports and recreation, and earlier this year Mr. Gores launched FlintNOW, a broad campaign to support short and long-term relief and revitalization efforts in Flint following the water crisis.
The Gores family has supported holiday toy distributions across Michigan since 2006, delivering an estimated 92,000 gifts to families, according to data from Mr. Gores’ organization. The Gores family’s partnership with Toys for Tots began in 2009 and has delivered over 75,000 toys to more than 30,000 children. (Prior to aligning with Toys for Tots, the family supported similar gift-giving programs through other organizations.)
Lt. Gen. Pete Osman, USMC (Ret), President and CEO of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, said he appreciates the continued support from Mr. Gores and the impact the donation has on thousands of underprivileged children and families in the southeast Michigan area.
“Finding a present under the tree on Christmas morning is an experience every child deserves,” said Lt. Gen. Pete Osman, USMC (Ret), President and CEO of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. “With the generous donation from Mr. Gores, we will be able to fulfill the Christmas holiday dreams of thousands of less fortunate children, who otherwise might have been forgotten. After all, every child deserves a little Christmas.”
